Piano Practice and Academic Performance in Children
Every so often a headline makes the rounds: "Music lessons make kids smarter." Parents share it, teachers post it, and somewhere a well-meaning aunt forwards it to a family she knows. I understand the appeal. It feels like confirmation that the time and money going into lessons is doing double duty — building musicianship and boosting grades at the same time.
I want to talk honestly about what the research actually shows, because I think you deserve a straight answer more than you deserve a reassuring one.
What the Studies Say — and What They Don't
The most careful reviews of this topic find little to no reliable academic benefit from music training once researchers account for study quality. A 2017 meta-analysis that pooled together a large number of child music-training studies did find a small overall benefit for cognitive and academic outcomes — but when the authors filtered for study quality, that effect dropped to essentially zero. A separate meta-analysis found a similarly small short-term advantage for instrumental music training, but it also found that the children who chose music were already performing slightly better before lessons even started. Once that baseline advantage was accounted for, the academic effect again came out close to zero. That word — *self-selection* — is at the heart of this whole conversation. Children who take sustained piano lessons often come from families with more parental education, more academic support at home, more financial stability, and a stronger culture of practicing difficult things. Those same factors predict school success entirely on their own. So when you see a study showing that kids in music lessons do better in school, you have to ask: did the lessons cause that, or were those children already on a stronger path? The honest answer, based on the best evidence we have, is that we cannot cleanly separate the two.Where Positive Findings Do Show Up
I don't want to dismiss every positive study, because some of them are worth knowing about. Researcher E. Glenn Schellenberg found in 2004 that children with at least three years of instrumental training outperformed peers on vocabulary and nonverbal reasoning. That finding gets cited often, and it's real — but it was a correlational comparison, not a randomized controlled trial, so it can't prove that the lessons themselves caused the difference. A study by Piro and Ortiz in 2009 reported that primary-grade students taking piano lessons scored higher on vocabulary and verbal sequencing than a control group. Again, a small study, and again, causation is hard to establish. The most consistent thread across the positive findings is language. Verbal ability, vocabulary, verbal sequencing — those come up more than math or spatial skills or reading fluency. Whether that connection is driven by the structured listening involved in music, or the vocabulary a child picks up talking about music with teachers and parents, or something else entirely, we don't fully know yet. What I can tell you is this: if you've seen your child's vocabulary expand during their years of lessons, that's worth noticing. It may not be coincidence. But it also isn't a guarantee, and it isn't the full story the headlines sometimes suggest.Where the Evidence Is Clear — and Where It Isn't
A three-year piano instruction study found positive effects on self-esteem and school music marks, which makes complete sense to me from what I see in the studio. It also found no effect on standardized math and language achievement, and no improvement on report-card performance in those subjects. Any cognitive advantage the music students showed appeared in the first two years and had faded by year three. A review published in *Psychological Bulletin* in 2020 concluded that the evidence for non-music academic benefits is, in their word, "null" when study rigor is taken seriously. So here is where things stand: - The evidence that piano lessons reliably raise math scores, reading scores, or standardized test scores is weak. - The evidence that music participation often accompanies stronger academic performance is real — but that pattern reflects who tends to take lessons, not necessarily what lessons do. - The evidence that music training may support verbal and language development is suggestive but not settled. - Organizations like the National Association for Music Education advocate strongly for music in schools, and I respect that advocacy — but their position statements are not the same thing as causal proof.What I See at the Piano Bench
I have been teaching long enough to say something with confidence that no meta-analysis can quite capture: consistent piano study builds real things. It builds the ability to read two lines of information at once and produce something physical with them. It builds the habit of sitting with frustration rather than walking away. It builds attention to detail — the kind where a single wrong note in measure twelve matters even when measures one through eleven went beautifully. It builds a tolerance for slow, incremental progress that is genuinely hard to teach in any other way. Are those things connected to school performance? I believe they are. But I hold that belief carefully, because I've also watched highly motivated, academically strong families go through years of lessons and not see the grade improvements they hoped for. And I've watched children struggle in school while thriving completely at the piano, which has its own value. I don't want you making decisions based on a promise the research can't keep. If your child is in lessons because you hope it will raise their math grade, I want you to know that hope is understandable but not well supported. If your child is in lessons because they're learning to love music, building patience, and developing a skill that will live in them for the rest of their life — that's a different conversation, and the ground under it is much more solid.A Note for Parents of Younger Students
If your child is around seven or eight and just getting started, you may hear other parents talk about music and brain development as though it's settled science. Now you know it's more complicated than that. What you can watch for is growth in the things I mentioned — focus, persistence, attention to detail, and genuine musical enjoyment. Those are real and measurable in your daily life with your child, and they don't require a peer-reviewed study to validate. I would also gently say: if your child practices consistently and reads carefully and sits through difficulty without giving up, those habits will show up in a classroom too. Not because piano caused them, but because your child is becoming someone who does hard things. The piano is just one good place to practice being that person.A Note for Adult Beginners
If you're an adult thinking about lessons for yourself, most of this research applies to children and doesn't speak directly to you. What I can say is that learning a complex skill as an adult — really learning it, not dabbling — is one of the more demanding and rewarding things you can do. The humility it requires, and the small victories it delivers, are worth the effort entirely on their own terms. You don't need academic research to justify it.Bringing It Back to the Studio
