Music Lessons, Memory, and Executive Function
Every few months a headline pops up somewhere online: "Piano lessons make kids smarter!" or "Music training boosts brain power!" Parents forward those articles to me, and honestly, I understand why. The claim is appealing. You are already investing time and money in lessons, so it is nice to think a cognitive bonus is part of the deal.
Here is what I want to do in this issue: walk you through what the research actually says, where it is solid, where it is thin, and what it means for the real children and adults sitting at real pianos. I am not going to oversell it. You deserve an honest read.
Start Here: What Is Executive Function?
Executive function is the term researchers use for the brain's management system. It covers four related skills: holding information in mind while you use it (working memory), staying focused on a task, switching smoothly between different demands, and stopping yourself from acting on the first impulse that comes along (inhibitory control). If you have ever watched a child try to follow a three-step direction and lose track by step two, you have seen working memory under pressure. If you have tried to proofread your own writing and kept reading what you meant instead of what you typed, you have felt inhibitory control fall short.
These skills matter in school because they sit underneath almost everything: following directions, finishing multi-step math problems, understanding what you just read, keeping it together when a task gets frustrating. They matter at work for the same reasons, just in adult packaging. So when researchers ask whether music training affects executive function, they are asking about something genuinely important.
What the Research Actually Shows
Working Memory: The Strongest Case
Of all the cognitive outcomes researchers have looked at, working memory has the most consistent support. Multiple studies, including some that used randomized designs rather than just comparing music students to non-students, have found improvements after piano or music instruction. Bugos and colleagues published a study in Psychology and Aging in 2007 in which older adults who received individualized piano instruction showed better executive functioning and working memory than controls. Guo and colleagues ran a randomized controlled trial in aging adults and reported similar gains in working memory and processing speed. On the children's side, an 18-month instrumental music program studied by Roden and colleagues outperformed a natural-science control group specifically on working memory measures.
Those are real findings. I do not want to wave them away. But I also want to be clear about what they are: specific results on specific tasks, from studies that ranged from a few weeks to about 18 months, most of them involving relatively small groups of participants. The effect sizes are generally described as small to moderate, not dramatic.
Attention and Inhibitory Control: Promising but Thinner
A frequently cited 2011 study by Moreno and colleagues found that about 20 days of computerized music training improved children's performance on a go/no-go task, which is a standard measure of the ability to stop a habitual response. That is interesting. But it was not a piano-only study, so I would not cite it as proof that piano lessons specifically produce that result. The attention evidence generally is smaller and less consistent than the working memory evidence.
Processing Speed and Task Switching: Real but Modest
Several adult piano-training studies, including randomized trials in older adults, report faster processing speed after instruction. A 12-month longitudinal piano study in healthy older adults found that participants improved more in processing speed and manual dexterity than in working memory, which is a reminder that the gains tend to be specific rather than global. Task switching shows up in some studies but is less often measured directly, so the evidence there is thinner still.
Why the Headlines Get It Wrong
Popular coverage of this research tends to flatten the nuance in ways that bother me, because parents then make decisions based on an inflated picture. A few things to keep in mind:
- Music students are not a random sample of children. Families who enroll children in music lessons often provide more structured support at home, more consistent routines, and more practice with sustained effort in general. When a study simply compares music students to non-music students without accounting for that, the music group looks better partly because of who they already were, not only because of what lessons did.
- Short studies may not reflect long-term learning. A six-week intervention tells you something interesting, but it does not tell you what happens over three years of lessons, or whether any gains persist once training ends.
- Specific task improvements are not the same as general intelligence. Doing better on a working memory test after months of piano practice does not mean a child's IQ went up or that their grades will automatically improve. Those are different things.
- School grades and emotional regulation are largely unsupported. I have seen promotional pieces claim that music lessons improve academic performance across the board. The studies in this area do not firmly establish that. It may be true in some cases, through some pathways, but it is not what the controlled research demonstrates.
Why Piano Is a Plausible Brain Workout Anyway
Here is what I think is actually going on, even setting aside any single study. When a student sits down to learn a new piece, they are doing several cognitively demanding things simultaneously. They are reading two staves of notation, translating symbols into finger movements on two hands that are doing different things, listening to what is coming out, comparing it to what they intended, catching errors in real time, and planning the next phrase while executing the current one. That is working memory, attention, sequencing, inhibition, and monitoring all happening at once, repeatedly, over years.
It makes sense that a sustained, demanding practice like that would leave some mark on the systems it exercises. The research suggests it does. The honest summary is that the gains appear to be real, specific, and modest rather than sweeping.
A Note for Adult Learners
If you are an adult who has thought about starting piano lessons, the aging research is genuinely encouraging. Two randomized controlled trials in older adults found meaningful improvements in working memory and processing speed from piano instruction. The 2007 Bugos study and the more recent Guo et al. trial both point in the same direction. Piano lessons are not a treatment for cognitive decline, and I would never present them that way. But for an adult who wants a challenging, rewarding activity that asks a lot of the brain in specific ways, the evidence is more solid than for most hobbies you might consider.
What This Means at the Piano Bench
For the parents reading this: if your child is working through a tricky passage and getting frustrated, that frustration is part of the process. The cognitive work happens precisely because it is hard to hold the rhythm in mind, watch both hands, and listen at the same time. That difficulty is not a sign something is wrong. It is the workout.
For students themselves, especially older students who are old enough to think about why they practice: every time you slow a passage down, identify the measure where things fall apart, fix just that spot, and then put it back in context, you are practicing error-monitoring and focused attention in a very deliberate way. That is a skill. It transfers.
And for anyone who is considering lessons but has not yet started: the research is a reasonable part of the picture, but it is not the whole reason to play piano. People play because music matters to them, because they want to, because they have always wished they could. The cognitive research is a nice supporting argument, not the main one.

Piano lessons appear to support working memory and, to a lesser degree, attention and processing speed—especially with sustained practice over time. The effect is real but specific and modest, not the broad intelligence boost some headlines suggest. The brain benefits come from doing the hard work of learning music, which means the cognitive value and the musical value are the same thing: showing up, practicing carefully, and sticking with it.
